An article of mine – Learning is Personal and it’s (past) time to recognize this – has just been published in Tipping Points magazine, serving the (US-based) Alliance for Self-Directed Education. The article reflects the thesis of my PhD dissertation, that learning is much more personal and subjective or idiosyncratic than is recognized in conventional psychology or education. Specifically, I draw on a suite of autobiographical excerpts I referenced as part of my PhD research from people such as the renowned disability rights activist Helen Keller and filmmaker Michael Moore, all of which help reveal a nature of learning that is deeply personal.
Writing for Tipping Points – a magazine serving educators supporting and advocating Self-Direction educational initiatives – afforded me a welcome opportunity to voice my own advocacy for this domain that captured my heart early in my educational career. Viva la revolucion!
