New Prison Math Project column

My latest column, an Interview with inmate-and-math-mentor Paul Sambursky, has been published in the spring 2026 issue of the Prison Mathematics Project newsletter. This remarkable (free) newsletter is available in paper and pdf form to male and female inmates and staff of American prisons. My column offers insights and strategies for inmates hoping to re-engage with mathematics while incarcerated.

In this issue, Paul Sambursky, an inmate of North Dakota State Penitentiary and a much-valued math mentor helping other inmates hone math skills, shares many insights with me about the work he has done for several years. Paul, who is winding down his sentence at NDSP, has many suggestions for math students and also for prison administrators wanting to assist inmates improve their math skills while incarcerated.
